Dr. Murray Shames is a prominent leader in vascular and general surgery, currently serving as the Richard G. Connar Endowed Professor and Chair of Surgery at the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa and the Surgeon in Chief of Tampa General Hospital. Dr. Shames completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania in 1990 and earned his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1994. He completed a General Surgery Residency at USF in 1999, followed by Vascular Surgery Fellowships at the University of Sydney (1999–2000) and Washington University in St. Louis (2000–2002). Returning to USF in 2002, he became a key figure in surgical education, serving as the Program Director for Vascular Surgery and initiating one of the first Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency Programs in the U.S.His contributions to surgical education include involvement with the ACGME Milestones Committee and the Association of Program Directors in Vascular Surgery (APDVS), where he developed the Fundamentals of Vascular Curriculum and the Introduction to Academic Vascular Surgery course. Dr. Shames has held leadership roles in various surgical organizations, including the Vascular Surgery Board of the American Board of Surgery and as a Past President of the APDVS.An esteemed speaker at national conferences, Dr. Shames has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications. His clinical focus is on complex aortic diseases, underscored by founding the USF/TGH Aortic Center in 2014. He is dedicated to mentorship, influencing many general surgery residents, vascular surgery trainees, and medical students throughout his career.
